Bard College — a music conservatory’s home, for teaching and performance

Annandale-on-Hudson, NY

Type: Academic / Arts
Theme: Making & Learning

Our design for the Laszlo Z. Bitó ’60 building at the Bard College Conservatory of Music is crafted to suit the Conservatory’s mission: providing top-level musical training in the context of a liberal arts education. Our 16,000 square foot layout reflects the alternating uses of instruction and performance by ensuring its spaces – teaching studios, classrooms, rehearsal spaces and a state-of-the-art performance hall– are exceptionally versatile.

The performance hall can seat 150 guests as comfortably as a small, intimate audience. Our acoustically isolated rehearsal studios can accommodate individual musicians, a professor and student, or small ensembles. We paired the building’s bold yet balanced massing with crisp white stucco and rich mahogany. As a result, despite its modest size, the Bard Conservatory of Music holds a strong presence on the Bard Campus.
