The mission of the Edward F. Albee Foundation is to serve writers and visual artists from all walks of life, by providing time and space in which to work without disturbance.

After finding success as a playwright, Edward Albee created a foundation to support artists across disciplines and foster American creativity. Located in a former horse stable in Montauk, New York, this artists residency provides rooms and studio space for writers and artists to work and expand their creative pursuits.

We rehabilitated the beloved existing barn and sensitively composed new dormers and graciously proportioned windows and doors, while renovating the interior to create accessible 21st century workspaces and a shared library and kitchen. Needed structural and envelope enhancements as well as new building systems are carefully integrated to enhance the barn’s inherent order, including revealing its roof shape and framing in the library. The renovation allows the residency to expand from seasonal to year-round operations. Outdoor terraces provide spaces for socializing as well as workspace. The Foundation is located on a secluded, wooded property, ensuring quiet and solitude for the resident fellows. The sitework minimizes the impact on existing wetlands, which were protected and restored with native plantings. A small cottage on the property was also renovated as a residence for the property’s caretaker.
