Materiality in Mid-size Projects

Noah Biklen was invited to speak at the Facades+ Symposium about recent DBP projects possessing recognizable, dynamic, and meticulous facades; the projects presented included a collaborative lighting installation on a community center’s exterior, an arts center that inverted the material palate of the surrounding I.M. Pei campus, and a custom curtain wall of precisely calibrated shading panels on the façade of an engineering company’s distribution headquarters.

“We approach facades as an interface between the building’s site and the interior: it is where we explore how to connect a building to its context, as a way to establish identity, how to make buildings that are inclusive and public, and as one of the primary tools to passively conserve energy.”
