She explores the layers of architecture, infrastructure, and public space that make New York unique. “If it weren’t for the water, there would be no New York. As an architect, I also find it meaningful that Manhattan doesn’t end, like many cities, by petering out. It ends because it is contained by rivers and a great harbor — by a hard, crisp edge, which gives the city its physical drama,” she said.
