Rabbit Hill Road Compound
Warren, Connecticut, 2000

This 3,000 square foot house serves as a weekend retreat in Litchfield County, Connecticut. The house is sited in conjunction with a garage and pool house to form a loose “courtyard” which captures a piece of the landscape. Newly crafted stone walls further define the “courtyard” and pool area.

While the pure forms of the house and outbuildings, with their galvanized metal roofing and stained wood shingles and vertical siding, refer to functional vernacular buildings, their deliberate composition is distinctly modern. This modern compositional strategy includes the large internal screened porch, which separates the main house from the guest bedrooms. Similarly, long ribbons of repeating windows fill the living room with daylight, making a space that is light and airy.
