Soho Loft
New York City, 1999
This 3,700 loft sits in a renovated industrial building in New York's Soho. The client, an artist and illustrator, wanted a space for living, working, and entertaining clients. The original columns of the loft building were retained as a foil for the modern vocabulary of the renovation. The composition emphasizes long axial views framing windows or distant objects. This strategy, combined with an open plan, and a muted palette of materials, gives the loft a sense of spaciousness and light. A series of sliding partitions of aluminum and translucent acrylic allow for flexible divisions between the major spaces. When open, the partitions are hidden in pockets in the wall. When closed, their translucent sheathing allows light and shadows to pass through.
