Joray Road House
Ellsworth, Connecticut, 2007
Overlooking thriving beaver ponds, this 6,500-square-foot house and its outbuildings sit on a sprawling 100-acre site in northwestern Connecticut. The four-bedroom house is comprised of simple straightforward volumes composed into a striking composition. The precise architecture is a counterpoint to the wooded rolling hills and meadows of the indigenous landscape.
A galvanized metal roof and stacked stone walls complement the painted cedar clapboard siding and wood windows. While the form and color of the compound celebrate the vernacular buildings of the area, the interior is decidedly spare and modern. The main floor of the house is a series of volumes and planes that define the boundaries of the living room, the dining room, and the kitchen. A two-story screen porch ties the two floors together, letting in abundant natural light.
