Sarah's Path House
Amagansett, New York, 2001
This 1,250 square foot, new structure was designed to house the owners until their plans for a larger main house on the property were eventually realized. The owners intended to convert this ‘cottage’ into the ‘main’ house’s garage. Now that design of the main house is underway the structure will instead become a guest wing attached to the rest of the house.
The simple building, clad in the vertical wood siding that is common locally and a metal roof, benefits from its conception as both cottage and garage. The large openings, (originally intended to become garage doors,) are filled in with an aluminum storefront-type window system. These openings bring in abundant light and air more typically found in an artist’s atelier than in a rural cottage. Similarly, the inexpensive concrete slab—a necessity for a garage—has been polished and sealed to make a clean and spare though richly textured floor throughout the cottage. Several of these details, including the concrete floors, will be retained in the main house.
