We designed this new house for a family with grown children and many grandchildren. The house is both expansive when fully inhabited and comfortably small when just the two owners are there. It sits on a long sloping property in northern Connecticut, facing west toward imposing distant views and east to a gentle rising meadow. A long volume encompasses all the major rooms of the house. The project is a series of volumes, both attached and separate, that create a private compound shielded from the road. The monotone exterior contrasts with the textures of the various materials, while making a uniform whole.
