DBPA was the architect for a new 10,000 sf building for the music and dance programs at Marlboro College in southern Vermont. Designed to nestle between wetlands and a rocky outcropping, the building
incorporates all elements of the Dance and Music departments, including
classroom and office spaces, rehearsal rooms, a digital recording studio,
and a 125 seat performance venue.
Reflecting the affinity of the two programs but recognizing their different
needs, the new building is actually a pair of similar volumes joined by
a shared lobby. This solution simply but effectively insulates the programs
from each other acoustically, while expressing their distinctness. The large
flexible Dance studio features expansive glazing, which permits abundant
natural light for classes and rehearsals. The Music program's performance
hall, in contrast, provides the more controlled environment that music recitals
require. The Music and Dance building helps define an area of the campus
devoted to arts and performance. The building opened during the fall of
2005 with a recital by world-renown pianist Peter Serkin. |
