Sanctuary at Bard College
Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, in design

The design for the Sanctuary at Bard College is at once focused on the display of art and creating spaces for contemplation. The building provides a refuge from an active campus for the works of 14 contemporary women artists.

Situated at a crossroads in a meadow, the Sanctuary embraces the site’s topography to provide multiple approaches and entrances that create an ambiguity between indoor and outdoor space. It is wholly embedded in a landscape shaped by native elements that shift with the seasons, including a wet meadow and meadow grasses.

Despite the building’s modest size, it contains a collection of rooms that present a diversity of shape, scale, and light. These spaces were designed for permanent works of art with detailed input from the artists and are highly specific while still keeping art in the foreground.
