Following the success of the 21c Museum Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky, for
clients Steve Wilson and Laura Lee Brown (ACE Unlimited), 21c Museum Hotel Austin is
a 270,000 sf luxury hotel building with gallery spaces for the exhibition
of work by prominent living artists. Along with a 44-story, 400,000 sf condominium
tower by Goody Clancy and developer partners including Poe Companies, REI
Real Estate Partnerships and Ironwood Real Estate, the project is a part
of a larger transformation of this downtown district into a mixed-use neighborhood.
On top of underground parking, a three-story podium houses the public spaces
of the hotel, including galleries, a sky-lit ballroom, and a second-level
outdoor sculpted court. The pixilated, shingled facade emphasizes the ever-present
Texas sunlight, and the glass walls of the ground floor cafe and restaurant
open fully to engage the street. Above, the colored glass facade of the
hotel tower creates a distinctive image for 21C on the outside and contributes
to the mood of the guest rooms within.
