Deborah Berke Partners Designs New Test Kitchen for ChopChop Magazine
March 22, 2017
ChopChop, a non-profit magazine dedicated to educating children and families about health and nutrition through cooking, celebrated the opening of their new test kitchen designed by Deborah Berke Partners. The space will be used for recipe testing, photo shoots, and small cooking classes for children and parents, and will consolidates the magazine’s editorial operations in one location. The design of the kitchen incorporates two cooktops and several different work surfaces for varied photographic backdrops. “The new kitchen is clean, simple, and elegant—nothing clashes with it,” said Sally Sampson, the founder and editor of ChopChop. “The magazine’s aesthetic is colorful, so this space is the ideal canvas for us. It’s like the perfect little black dress.”
For this pro-bono project, Deborah Berke Partners solicited donations from many manufacturers and suppliers, including Accuserve Lighting, Bosch, Cosentino, Nemo Tile, Porcelanosa, and Signature Floors. We are so grateful for their contributions to the project and support for ChopChop and its mission. “When I heard that they were raising money in hopes of building a test kitchen, I called Sally and told her, ‘We believe in what you’re doing, so we’re going to design your kitchen for free,’” said Stephen Brockman, senior principal at Deborah Berke Partners and the project’s lead designer with partner Deborah Berke.
For the opening party, Deborah Berke Partners designed an “Architecture Fun Sheet” with coloring book drawings and word games to teach children about architecture and construction.
