The independent feature film, Columbus, directed renowned by video essayist Kogonada, opened in New York and Los Angeles last weekend. Set amid the modern architecture of Columbus, Indiana, the film depicts a young woman’s intellectual and personal awakening and quietly explores the power of art and design to influence everyday life. Los Angeles Times architecture critic Christopher Hawthorne praised the movie for the way “Kogonada wraps the sophistication and the struggle together in a single locale.” While the New York Times noted that the film uses “architecture as a springboard for other questions.” You can listen to Kogonada discuss his influences and artistic intentions on this segment with Frances Anderton on KCRW radio in LA. Partner , Kogonada, and star Haley Lu Richardson participated in a Q&A after the August 5th premier. Visit the film’s homepage for additional screenings across the country.
